Welcome to the house level!
This level is the final piece in our phonological awareness program. At this level, we deal with manipulating individual phonemes through deletion and substitution. This level of working with sounds has shown to be a vital part of phonological development.
While this is not typically taught in schools, research has shown that these skills typically develop in children around second grade as they develop their reading and writing skills.
However, studies show that children who struggle to acquire reading and writing skills often do not naturally develop these skills. They can learn them if they are explicitly taught them.
At the house level, we are looking beyond basic segmenting and blending. By taking the phonological skills to this level, we are preparing the brain to make the transition from laborious decoding of each word encountered to the fluent and instant word reading of a good reader.
