We are now going to play with words by removing syllables from them.

To Print:

To Find:

  • Something you can move, it could be a set of blocks, buttons, counters, marshmallows, raisins or anything else you have to hand. (Manipulatives)
  • An old jigsaw puzzle (an easy one would be ideal!)

Introduction

Discovery:

Now it is your child’s turn.

  • Helper: Print off the discovery sheet.
  • Helper: Say the word clearly, and then name the syllable the child will delete.
  • “Say cupcake without the cup.”
  • Child: Finds the syllables pointing to a manipulative for each syllable.
  • Child: Moves the correct manipulative away for the deleted syllable.
  • Child: Points at the syllable/s remaining and gives the remaining syllable.
  • Helper: If the child is incorrect, point at the syllable that is in error and support till the child finds the correct answer.

Words to practice witharmchair (remove arm), pancakes (remove cakes), rainbow, (remove rain), Backpack (remove back)

Guided Practice

  • Helper  & Child: Take the jigsaw puzzle and fit pieces together into 12 pairs.
  • Helper: Give the word and the deletion in the same way as before.
  • Child: Finds the syllables pointing to a puzzle piece for each syllable.
  • Child: Removes the correct puzzle piece from the pair.
  • Child: Points at the syllable/s remaining and gives the remaining syllable.

Words- remove the part in bold eg “Say grasshopper without grass.”: grasshopper, jellybeanbathtub, drugstore, blackbirdhousefly, swordfish, toothbrush, sandcastlelipstick, corndog, earring

Recording

Using the recording activity:

  • Look at the picture, and say what it is. (eg. cupcake)
  • Now look at the second word, what is that? (eg. cup)
  • Now take the second word (the syllable) away from the first word. What do you have left? (eg. cake)
  • Draw a picture of what is left.
  • Repeat with the other words on the page.
