We are now going to play with words by removing syllables from them.

To Print:

To Find:

  • Something you can move, it could be a set of blocks, buttons, counters, marshmallows, raisins or anything else you have to hand. (Manipulatives)
  • An old jigsaw puzzle (an easy one would be ideal!)

Introduction

Discovery:

Now it is your child’s turn.

  • Helper: Print off the discovery sheet.
  • Helper: Say the word clearly, and then name the syllable the child will delete.
  • “Say cupcake without the cup.”
  • Child: Finds the syllables pointing to a manipulative for each syllable.
  • Child: Moves the correct manipulative away for the deleted syllable.
  • Child: Points at the syllable/s remaining and gives the remaining syllable.
  • Helper: If the child is incorrect, point at the syllable that is in error and support till the child finds the correct answer.

Words to practice with: armchair (remove arm), pancakes (remove cakes), rainbow, (remove rain), Backpack (remove back)

Recording

Using the recording activity:

  • Look at the picture, and say what it is. (eg. cupcake)
  • Now look at the second word, what is that? (eg. cup)
  • Now take the second word (the syllable) away from the first word. What do you have left? (eg. cake)
  • Draw a picture of what is left.
  • Repeat with the other words on the page.
